About the PNG Compressor

PNG files are lossless, which makes them big. The most effective way to shrink them is colour quantisation: reducing the image to a palette of up to 256 well-chosen colours and saving it as an 8-bit PNG. For screenshots, logos, icons and illustrations the result is visually identical and 60 to 80 percent smaller.

FileStripe builds an optimal palette for each image, supports full alpha transparency and offers optional dithering for smooth gradients.

How to compress PNG images

  1. Add PNG images.
  2. Choose the number of colours (256 is safest) and dithering.
  3. Download the optimised PNGs.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as TinyPNG?

It uses the same idea (palette quantisation) and gives similar savings, but runs entirely in your browser with no upload or limits.

Is the PNG Compressor free?

Yes. The PNG Compressor is completely free with no sign-up, no watermarks, no daily limits and no premium tier.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. FileStripe processes your files locally in your web browser using JavaScript. Nothing is uploaded, so the PNG Compressor is safe for private photos and confidential documents and even works offline once the page has loaded.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. The PNG Compressor works in Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Samsung Internet on phones, tablets and computers. On a phone you can pick files from your photo library or files app and share the result straight to another app.
