Video Bitrate Calculator

Work out the bitrate to export at so a video fits a size limit, like Discord's or an email attachment's.

Free to use · No account needed · Files are processed on your device and never uploaded

Example: Video bitrate 3.14 Mbps (3,139 kbps). Change the values above to calculate your own.

About the Video Bitrate Calculator

Chat apps and forms cap file sizes, so you need to choose a bitrate that lands just under the limit. Enter the target size and the video's length, and use the result as the target bitrate in HandBrake, OBS, Premiere, DaVinci Resolve or FFmpeg.

Two-pass encoding hits the target most accurately. If the result is very low (under ~500 kbps for 720p), shorten the clip or lower the resolution, or the video will look blocky.

How to use the Video Bitrate Calculator

  1. Enter your numbers (or keep the example).
  2. The result updates instantly as you type.
  3. Copy the result, or copy the link: it keeps your numbers so you can share them.

How it's calculated

Total bitrate = target size in bits × 0.98 ÷ duration in seconds. Video bitrate = total − audio bitrate. The 2% margin covers container overhead.
