About the Image to Text (OCR)

Optical character recognition (OCR) reads the letters in an image and turns them into text you can copy, edit and search. Use it on photos of documents, receipts, screenshots, slides or scanned PDFs.

Most online OCR services upload your image to a server. FileStripe runs the open-source Tesseract engine inside your browser instead. The first run downloads about 6 MB of recognition data, which is then cached.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is it?

Very good on clear printed text (95%+). Accuracy drops with handwriting, low resolution, strong perspective or busy backgrounds. Crop to the text and use a sharp, straight photo for best results.

Which languages are supported?

English is built in. Text in other Latin-script languages is often read reasonably, but accents may be missed.

Is the Image to Text (OCR) free?

Yes. The Image to Text (OCR) is completely free with no sign-up, no watermarks, no daily limits and no premium tier.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. FileStripe processes your files locally in your web browser using JavaScript. Nothing is uploaded, so the Image to Text (OCR) is safe for private photos and confidential documents and even works offline once the page has loaded.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. The Image to Text (OCR) works in Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Samsung Internet on phones, tablets and computers. On a phone you can pick files from your photo library or files app and share the result straight to another app.
