About the Dead Pixel Test

Check a new screen within the return window. The test fills the whole display with one colour at a time; a dead pixel shows as a black dot on bright colours, a stuck pixel as a red, green or blue dot that never changes, and a hot pixel as a white dot on black.

Clean the screen first so dust isn't mistaken for a pixel, and look at each colour from a normal viewing distance and then up close.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stuck pixel be fixed?

Sometimes. Stuck pixels (always one colour) can recover after rapidly flashing colours for a while or with gentle pressure. Dead pixels (always black) usually can't.

How many dead pixels are acceptable?

It depends on the manufacturer's pixel policy (ISO 9241-307 classes). Many brands replace a panel with even one bright pixel; check your warranty.

Is the Dead Pixel Test free?

Yes. The Dead Pixel Test is completely free with no sign-up, no watermarks, no daily limits and no premium tier.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. FileStripe processes your files locally in your web browser using JavaScript. Nothing is uploaded, so the Dead Pixel Test is safe for private photos and confidential documents and even works offline once the page has loaded.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. The Dead Pixel Test works in Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Samsung Internet on phones, tablets and computers. On a phone you can pick files from your photo library or files app and share the result straight to another app.
