How to Make a Meme Without a Watermark

Make classic top-and-bottom-text memes from your own pictures, free and without watermarks or apps. Tips on fonts, text size and formats.

Most meme apps stamp their logo on your image or want a subscription to remove it. You don't need either.

Make a meme in 3 steps

  1. Open the meme generator and choose a picture.
  2. Type the top and bottom text. The preview updates as you type.
  3. Download, or tap share on your phone to send it straight to a chat.

Why memes use Impact

The classic meme look, bold white Impact with a thick black outline, became standard because it stays readable on any background. Keep the outline on; switch off ALL CAPS if you want a modern look.

Tips

  • Crop first. Crop to the important part so the text doesn't cover faces.
  • Short text. Two or three words per line read best on phones.
  • Want a caption bar instead? Use Add text to image with a background box at the top.
  • Animated meme? Make a GIF from a video clip.

Memes from your own photos are yours. Screenshots from films and shows are usually tolerated as commentary or parody, but using them in ads or merchandise can infringe copyright.
