How to Convert MP4 to MP3 and Extract Audio from Any Video

Save the soundtrack of a video as an MP3, free and without uploading: on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android. Plus which bitrate to choose.

Whether it's a lecture, a voice recording, a song from your own video or a podcast clip, saving just the audio makes the file a fraction of the size and lets you play it anywhere.

Convert in your browser (any device)

  1. Open the MP4 to MP3 converter (or Video to MP3 for MOV, WebM and other formats).
  2. Add one or more videos.
  3. Pick a quality and click Convert. Download the MP3s, or all of them as a ZIP.

The video is decoded by your browser and the MP3 is encoded on your device, so even a large video doesn't need to be uploaded anywhere.

Which MP3 bitrate should I choose?

  • 320 kbps: the highest MP3 quality. Use it for music you care about.
  • 192 kbps: indistinguishable from 320 for most people, about 40% smaller. The best default.
  • 128 kbps: fine for casual listening and podcasts.
  • 64-96 kbps, mono: speech only (lectures, meetings). Tiny files.

The audio inside most MP4 files is already compressed (AAC at 96-256 kbps), so choosing 320 kbps can't add quality that isn't there. 192 kbps is usually the sweet spot.

Want only part of the audio?

Convert first, then open the MP3 cutter to trim the start and end, add a fade, and save just the bit you need. It also opens MP4 files directly.

Common problems

"Your browser can't read the audio": some iPhone .mov files use codecs that Chrome on Windows can't decode. Try Safari, or Edge with the HEVC extension installed.

The MP3 is silent: the video has no audio track (screen recordings without sound, for example).

Converting your own videos, or videos you have the rights to, is fine. Downloading and converting copyrighted content you don't own can break copyright law and the terms of the site you got it from.
