How to Make a Ringtone from a Song or Recording
Cut the perfect 30-second clip from any MP3, M4A or video, add a fade, and set it as your ringtone on Android or iPhone. Free, no app needed.
A custom ringtone just needs a short clip of audio in the right format. You can cut one in your browser in a minute.
1. Cut the clip
- Open the MP3 cutter and add your song, voice memo or even a video.
- Drag the markers on the waveform to select 20-30 seconds. Press Preview to listen.
- Add a 1-2 second fade in and fade out so it doesn't start or stop abruptly.
- Cut and download as MP3.
2a. Set it on Android
Move the MP3 to your phone's Ringtones folder (or simply Downloads), then go to Settings > Sound > Phone ringtone and pick it. On Samsung: Settings > Sounds and vibration > Ringtone > + to add your file.
2b. Set it on iPhone
iPhone ringtones must be .m4r files of up to 40 seconds, added through GarageBand or a computer:
- GarageBand on iPhone: import the MP3 into a new project, then Share > Ringtone.
- Mac or PC: rename an AAC (.m4a) copy to .m4r and drag it onto your iPhone in Finder or Apple Devices / iTunes.
Tips
- Choose a part that's recognisable in the first 2 seconds: most calls are answered quickly.
- Normalise quiet recordings with the volume slider in the audio converter.
